Common scams to watch out for

Not sure if something’s legitimate? Send it to us and we’ll tell you. Better to ask than to click.

📞 “Microsoft” phone calls

Microsoft will never call you. These are scammers trying to get remote access to your computer.

📧 Fake delivery / bank emails

Emails pretending to be from Royal Mail, your bank, or HMRC. They want you to click a link and enter your details.

🔒 Ransomware pop-ups

“Your files have been encrypted. Pay £500 in Bitcoin.” Sometimes fake, sometimes real. Either way, call us before doing anything.

⚠️ “Your computer is infected” pop-ups

Scary warnings telling you to call a number. They’re almost always fake. Close the browser and call us instead.

What to do in an emergency

If you think you’ve been hacked, have a virus, or something’s seriously wrong:

1

Don’t panic — and don’t click anything else

2

Disconnect from the internet — unplug the cable or turn off WiFi

3

Don’t turn it off — some recovery is easier with it still on

4

Call us — we can often help remotely or come to you quickly

Why act fast?

⏱️

Viruses spread — they can infect more files or spread to other devices

💸

Scammers work fast — if they have access to your accounts, they’ll empty them quickly

💾

Data recovery is time-sensitive — the more you use the drive, the less chance of recovery

🔐

Passwords can be changed — we can help secure your accounts before more damage is done

Questions people ask

Straight answers about security and data recovery.

Do I need antivirus software?

Yes, but you don’t necessarily need to pay for it. Windows Defender (built into Windows 10 and 11) is actually pretty good these days. We can check your setup and recommend whether you need anything extra based on how you use your computer. A security review is included in our £75 health check.

Can you definitely recover my files?

We can’t guarantee it — nobody honestly can. It depends on what happened and how badly the drive is damaged. But we’ll assess it for free and tell you the realistic chances before you commit to anything. If we can’t recover your data, you don’t pay.

How much does data recovery cost?

Our Level 1 data recovery (software-based recovery of deleted files) is £145 fixed fee, with a “No Data, No Fee” guarantee. For more complex cases involving physical drive damage, we can refer you to specialist labs. We’ll give you a clear assessment first so you know what to expect.

I think I've been scammed — what do I do?

Call your bank immediately if you’ve given out financial details. Change your passwords on another device. Then call us — we can check your computer for anything the scammers might have installed and help secure your accounts. The sooner you act, the better. We can help remotely at £45 for 30 minutes, or on-site at £85 per hour.

Should I pay the ransomware demand?

Generally, no. There’s no guarantee you’ll get your files back, and paying encourages more attacks. Call us first — sometimes we can decrypt files without paying, or recover them from backups you didn’t know you had. We’ll give you honest advice based on your specific situation.

How do I know if an email is genuine?

Check the sender’s actual email address (not just the display name). Look for spelling mistakes. Be suspicious of urgency (“Act now!”). Never click links asking you to log in — go to the website directly instead. When in doubt, forward it to us and we’ll tell you if it’s legit.
